A waste sorting conveyor belt purchase can look straightforward until quotations arrive. One supplier proposes a smooth PVC belt, another recommends a heavier rubber construction, and a third adds cleats for the inclined section. Even when width and length match, these quotations may represent very different solutions.
For recycling procurement, the first task is therefore not finding the lowest belt price. It is establishing what each conveyor section actually handles and then determining whether potential suppliers can manufacture, document and repeat the required specification. Mixed municipal waste, plastics, cardboard, glass fragments, construction debris and scrap create different combinations of impact, abrasion, cuts, contamination and loading. Inclined conveyors add another question: whether the belt surface alone can retain the material or whether a cleated construction is required.

Choose the belt family from the duty first, then qualify the supplier. Cleated belts address material retention on inclined or controlled-feed sections, but cleat height, pitch, attachment and conveyor geometry must match the application. For bulk purchasing, compare suppliers against one controlled technical specification rather than comparing belt prices by width and length alone.
A recycling plant rarely imposes the same duty on every conveyor. An infeed conveyor receiving mixed waste can experience irregular loading and impact. A manual or automated sorting section may need a stable, predictable surface. A takeaway conveyor can carry a relatively uniform recovered fraction. An incline feeding a bunker, baler or another processing stage may require positive material retention.
That is why specifying one belt type for the entire line simply because it is a “recycling conveyor” can create unnecessary cost in some sections and insufficient durability in others.

A PVC conveyor belt can make sense on lighter sorting and transfer sections, especially when procurement needs a specific surface pattern, guides, cleats or fabricated configuration. Plastic recycling, packaging-related recovered materials and selected sorting operations may fall into this category.
But “light waste” is not a technical specification. A stream of empty plastic containers and a stream containing broken glass, metal fragments and rigid mixed plastics can have very different cut and puncture risks even when the conveyor carries similar weight.
Ask the supplier to define the belt construction rather than quoting “green PVC belt” or another catalog description. Surface, carcass, underside, joint and edge construction all affect how the belt behaves on the machine.
As the duty moves toward mixed bulk waste, heavier loading, abrasive fractions, repeated impact or sharp material, a rubber conveyor belt specification deserves closer consideration.
The important point is not simply that rubber is “stronger.” A rubber belt still has to be selected around the required carcass strength, cover properties, cover thickness, loading point, pulley arrangement and splice. An unnecessarily heavy construction can add cost and may not match the conveyor geometry; an underspecified construction can suffer cover cuts, carcass damage or premature splice problems.
For an existing recycling line, photographs of the damaged belt can be valuable RFQ evidence. Deep cuts, punctures, edge damage, cover wear and repeated splice failure do not necessarily have the same cause. A capable supplier should ask what failed before proposing the replacement.
Cleats are primarily about controlling material movement. If loose recyclables slide backward on an incline, increasing belt friction alone may not be the right solution. A cleated configuration can divide the load and improve retention as material moves upward.
However, procurement should not specify “cleated belt” without dimensions. The supplier needs to understand the material, largest pieces, required throughput, incline, belt speed and conveyor geometry before confirming cleat profile, height and spacing.
