Chevron conveyor belt suppliers earn trust fastest when they match the cleat height to the incline angle and the largest lump size on your belt before they quote, not after the roll is cut. That one sentence is the whole discipline behind this page. We are Ningbo Sinoconve Belt Co., Ltd. Both experiences teach the same thing. Most chevron belt problems are not mystery failures. They are mismatches that were visible on paper weeks before the first splice, and nobody ticked the box.

01Match the Cleat Height to the Lump Size, Not to the Photo

The first thing we ask for is never a drawing. It is five numbers: incline angle, maximum lump size, capacity in tonnes per hour, belt speed, and a one-line description of the material. Send those five and we can usually tell you within an hour whether your duty needs a 16 mm cleat or a 32 mm one, and whether the pocket between two cleats will actually carry your rock instead of rolling it back down.

Cleat height and cleat pitch work as a pair. A tall cleat on a short pitch makes a narrow pocket that fines will not fill and sticky material will bridge across. A short cleat on a long pitch lets round lumps roll between the ribs on a steep incline. Cheap chevron conveyor belts are often sold on cleat height alone, with no pitch stated, and that is not enough information to buy on. For crushed rock and aggregate we usually start around 16 mm to 25 mm cleat height with a pitch roughly two to two and a half times the largest lump, then adjust for moisture and for how much of the load is fines. Every figure below is typical, confirm against the actual duty and the approved drawing before you commit.

What happens if the cleat is too tall for the lump?

Nothing dramatic at first, which is what makes it dangerous. The belt runs, the plant runs, and the operators get used to a small trickle of material back down the incline at the boot. Then the trickle scours the cover between the cleats, the pattern valleys go smooth, and traction falls off. By the time someone calls a conveyor belt supplier again, the belt is eighteen months old and the complaint is "it wore out early". It did not wear out. It was asked to carry a pocket it could not fill.

We also ask about the drop height at the load point. A 2 m drop onto a 16 mm cleat at the tail end will break cleats at the root radius, and no pattern survives that. If the drop is high, either move the chute or specify an impact zone and a thicker top cover under it.

02Pick the Pattern Type and the Moulding Process Together

There is no single best chevron pattern, only a pattern that suits your material. Open-V suits coarse, wet or sticky rock because the ribs shed water instead of trapping it. Closed-V, sometimes called U-shaped, holds fines on the belt better and is common in cement and clinker duties. Diamond and herringbone patterns give a more continuous grip and behave better on short, shallow inclines where you still want the belt to trough and train normally. We build all of them on the same presses, and the choice runs through a short conversation rather than a catalogue.

Where buyers get caught is the moulding process. A chevron belt can be made by vulcanising the pattern into the belt as one body, or by cutting rubber strips and bonding them onto a finished belt. The first gives you a continuous bond across the whole cleat footprint. The second is faster and cheaper, and it is where delamination stories come from. When we quote, we state which method we use and we do not switch it silently between the sample and the production run. Many chevron conveyor belt manufacturers work from a fixed set of moulds and will not cut a new one for a small order, so ask what already exists before you design a new pattern. Where the incline is shallow and the load is bagged or boxed rather than bulk, a rough top conveyor belt is often the better answer, and we will say so rather than sell you a pattern you do not need.

Can the pattern be changed without changing the base belt?

Within limits, yes. On the same base belt we can run a different pattern height, a different cleat pitch, or a different rib profile, because the pattern is created in the press rather than in the fabric. That is useful when you are carrying two materials on similar conveyors and want one spare belt specification instead of two. It is also why our engineers ask for the full industrial conveyor belt duty picture rather than a part number — two duties can look identical on a purchase order and behave completely differently on site.

Two geometry details change the cost of the mould and the running life of the belt. The first is the root radius where the cleat meets the cover; a radius that is too sharp concentrates stress and cracks appear in the first cold season. The second is the draft angle on the rib flank, which decides whether the mould releases cleanly and whether the rib keeps its full width at the top. Ask for both on the drawing, in millimetres, not as "standard".

If your duty sits above roughly 35°, it is worth comparing a chevron belt with a sidewall conveyor belt before you commit. Corrugated sidewalls with transverse cleats handle steep angles better than surface pattern alone, at the price of a more complicated loading zone and higher belt weight. 03Lock Down the Base Belt Under the Pattern

The chevron pattern is the visible part, so it gets all the attention in a quote comparison. The base belt is where the tension lives. Three things must be stated explicitly, and they must match on the drawing, the mill certificate and the belt edge marking: carcass type and ply count, tension rating, and cover grade with top and bottom cover thickness.

For a typical quarry incline in the 800 mm to 1,200 mm width range, we see EP carcass most often, two to four plies, with per-ply tension ratings in the 125 N/mm to 300 N/mm band depending on the duty and safety factor. Nylon-nylon appears where impact resistance matters more than stretch control. Steel cord enters the picture on high-tension, long-centre duties, and those normally come with a flatter, more heavily engineered base. Cover grade is dictated by the material: abrasive crushed stone pushes you toward a high-abrasion cover to DIN 22102-1 or an equivalent RMA grade, with abrasion loss measured by ISO 4649 and a limit you should confirm against your own specification sheet, because "W grade" gets used loosely in the market.

How do you check ply count without cutting the belt?

You cannot, reliably, from the outside. Ply count is read from the cut edge or from the documentation. So we make sure both exist, because every roll that leaves our conveyor belt factory is tied to a production batch. The roll ships with a mill certificate that lists the carcass, and we keep a cut sample per batch. If a buyer receives a chevron belt with no test certificate and no wording on the edge, the only way to verify ply count is to destroy a piece of it. That is a bad position to be in on a project schedule, and it is entirely avoidable at the ordering stage.

One more base belt detail that buyers forget: the belt has to be mouldable. Very thick covers, very stiff carcasses and short cleat pitches fight each other in the press. When a specification is over-engineered for the incline, we say so, because a heavier base belt that will not trough properly costs more and runs worse. If your plant buys across several lines at once — incline belts for the quarry, flat belts for the yard, plus rollers and pulleys — it is worth consolidating the specification discussion. 04Verify How the Cleat Is Bonded to the Base Belt

If we had to name the single most common field failure of a chevron rubber conveyor belt, it would be cleat separation, not cover wear. The cleat is pulled sideways every time it passes a skirt, it flexes every time it passes a pulley, and it is the highest-stress point on the whole belt. Anything less than a full vulcanised bond will eventually show up as a lifting rib or a torn root.

So ask the supplier how the bond is made, and then ask for evidence. Three answers tell you a lot. First, whether the pattern is moulded in the same vulcanising cycle as the base belt, or bonded afterwards. Second, what adhesion value is specified between cleat and cover, and by which test method. Third, whether the factory keeps peel or pull test records from production, not only from a one-off type test two years ago.

Can you test the bond without destroying the belt?

Partly. Visual inspection at the cleat ends and a blunt screwdriver run along the root will find lifting ribs on arrival. Beyond that, meaningful adhesion data comes from a cut strip. We suggest buyers keep one 1 m sample from each production batch, stored indoors with the batch number written on it, so a later claim has an evidence base on both sides. That single habit has settled more disagreements between a plant and a supplier than any clause in a contract.

One practical note on cleat compound. Cleats take abrasion on the face and repeated flexing at the root, and those two demands pull the recipe in different directions. A very hard cleat resists abrasion but cracks at the root; a very soft one flexes happily and wears away at the face. Ask what hardness band the cleat compound sits in, and expect an answer in Shore A with a range, not a single number.

This is also the stage where an experienced conveyor belt distributor adds value, because a distributor who has handled claims in your region will tell you which pattern geometries survive your climate and which do not. Local field evidence beats a specification sheet, and it costs nothing to ask for it.

05Confirm the Chevron Edge Margin Around the Skirt Line

Now we reach the check that most often gets skipped, and the one that produces the fastest failure. On an incline conveyor, the load zone usually has skirt boards with rubber sealing strips pressing on the belt. Those strips need a flat running surface. If a moulded rib runs under the skirt, the strip catches the rib, the rib tears, and the skirt rubber is destroyed in a few shifts.

The fix is an edge margin: a defined width of flat belt on each side of the pattern where the ribs stop short. The number depends on belt width, skirt gap and whether the belt wanders on the training idlers. On narrower belts a 50 mm to 75 mm flat margin per side is common; on wide quarry belts we typically see 100 mm to 150 mm per side. These are typical starting values, and the final figure should be confirmed against the actual duty and the approved drawing, because a belt that mistracks by 40 mm on a wet day needs more margin than a perfectly aligned one.

What information should the buyer send with the enquiry?

Four items make this check exact rather than approximate. A belt width and the position of the skirt line relative to the belt centreline. The skirt rubber gap, in millimetres. The expected lateral wander, or simply a note that the belt mistracks in wet weather. And a photo of the loading zone with the skirt boards in place. With those, we can set the pattern width on the drawing before the press is loaded, and the belt arrives ready to run.

Edge condition is the second half of this check. Moulded edges hold a cleaner line than cut edges and resist edge damage from the skirt seal. The trade-off between them is real and worth a conversation rather than a default, because on a rough incline duty the difference shows up in edge wear within a season.

It is also worth deciding early whether the chevron pattern should run all the way to the belt edge on the return side, or stop short there as well. We usually keep the flat margin on both faces, because a return-side rib can catch on the return idler brackets. A small drawing decision at quotation stage saves a maintenance job later, and it is a normal part of the FAQ page conversation with first-time buyers.

06Check Troughability, Cleat Clearance and the Idler Set

A chevron belt is stiffer across its width than a flat belt, because the pattern adds material and resists bending in the transverse direction. That affects two things: how the belt forms into a trough on the carrying idlers, and how it behaves when it passes small-diameter rollers on the return side.

On the carrying side, a 35° three-roller troughing set usually suits a chevron belt better than a 45° set, since the flatter trough puts less bending stress into the pattern and the shoulders stay in contact with the belt. Above 45° the belt can bridge the wing rollers, the centre roller carries all the load, and the pattern either cracks or the belt starts to mistrack. On the return side we recommend avoiding narrow roll-type idlers, which press the ribs and deform them over time; rubber-disc return rollers or flat return idlers treated with care are friendlier to a profiled surface. Which pulley diameters does a chevron belt need?

Larger than a flat belt of the same carcass, and the smaller the pulley, the worse the rib fatigue. As a working rule we look at carcass ply count, cover thickness and cleat height together, then set a minimum pulley diameter well above the flat-belt value for that carcass. The cleat height is the driver: a 32 mm cleat crossing a small pulleys repeatedly is being bent back and forth at its root all day. If your head and tail pulleys are fixed by an existing frame, tell us the diameters at quotation stage, because that is a constraint we can design around. If we learn about it after the belt is made, the only options are usually a shorter belt life or new pulleys.

While you are looking at the conveyor frame, check the drive side too. Plants that run chevron belts on one conveyor and V-belt drives on the crusher, the screen or the feeder usually buy both from the same maintenance budget. It does not change the chevron specification, but it does simplify the container and the paperwork.

07Fix the Splice Design and the Pattern Match Before Shipping

An incline belt is normally spliced on site, and on a profiled belt the splice is where most installation trouble appears. Two questions must be answered on paper: how the joint is made, and how the pattern lines up across it.

Vulcanised splice is the default for a chevron belt on a load-bearing incline, because a mechanical fastener cannot follow the rib geometry and its plates sit proud of the surface, catching the skirt and the material. The splice is stepped, and the cleats in the splice zone are re-moulded or matched so the pattern continues across the joint. If your site practice is a mechanical splice, say so early: we then offset the cleat pitch so the joint lands in a valley, and we supply the matching fastener specification.

Pattern alignment, sometimes written as cleat register, is the tolerance you should agree in millimetres. A rib that is offset by half a pitch at the joint leaves a hole the material finds immediately. On a 300 mm pitch, a 15 mm offset is invisible; a 150 mm offset means half the pocket is missing and the belt will spill at the splice every cycle. Ask for a written tolerance and ask for the splice drawing with the cleat positions dimensioned.

How much extra belt length should the order include?

Enough for the take-up travel plus the splice. Take-up stroke varies with conveyor length and tension, and long incline conveyors with gravity take-up can need a metre or more of reserve. For the splice itself, the lap length depends on carcass and ply count. Rather than guess, we ask for conveyor centre distance, take-up type and take-up travel, then add a stated allowance. We also recommend shipping a small bag of spare cleat material or a short offcut so that a damaged rib can be repaired on site without waiting for a shipment. Buyers who run 24-hour operations usually accept that suggestion quickly.

One more installation detail belongs in the plan rather than in the price negotiation: the platen size of your vulcanising press. The splice length has to fit within it, or the joint gets done in stages with a higher risk of misalignment. Cold weather slows the splice cure as well, so leave time for it. 08Fix the Roll Format and Packing for a Profiled Belt

You cannot coil a chevron belt the way you coil a flat belt, and packing instructions deserve a line in the purchase order. Rolled too tightly, the ribs press into the cover and into each other, the cleats take a permanent set, and the belt arrives with flattened ribs that never fully recover. We roll profiled belting with protection between wraps, profile facing outward, and we state the maximum roll diameter and roll weight for your container.

What to specify in the PO: roll length per roll, maximum roll outside diameter, maximum roll weight, whether a core tube is required, and whether rolls should be palletised or shipped loose. For container loading, roll weight drives the decision. A 1,200 mm wide belt is heavy, so a 50 m roll of a thick quarry belt can be close to the limit a forklift will comfortably handle on site. Splitting into 25 m rolls sometimes costs almost the same and makes the roll manageable at the unloading bay.

Inside the package, ask for moisture protection. Belting that spends three weeks at sea, then sits in a humid port warehouse, needs a moisture barrier rather than a plastic sheet that traps condensation against the rubber. We wrap with a barrier layer plus edge protection on the roll, strap with steel bands cushioned to avoid cutting the cover, and load so rolls cannot shift in transit.

Should the packing be documented with photos?

Yes, and we do it as standard. Photos of each roll before loading, the roll number visible, and photos of the loaded container with the stowage pattern. Those images settle two arguments quickly: whether damage happened before or after loading, and whether the number of rolls matches the packing list. Buyers who have ever opened a container to find a shifted load and a crushed edge know how valuable a pre-loading photo set is. The logic is the same for a sealed idler component or any other long-lead item on the same project.

09Insist on Marking and Traceability on Every Roll

A belt with no marking is a belt with no history. Marking is not decoration; it is what lets you match a delivered roll to a purchase order, a batch, a test record and a claim, three years later. Before you order, agree what will be marked and where, and put it in the specification.

The minimum set we mark: supplier name and country of manufacture, carcass type and ply count, tension rating, cover grade, top and bottom cover thickness, belt width, total length, pattern designation and cleat height, production date, batch number, roll number, and the buyer's PO number. On a chevron belt the pattern designation matters as much as the carcass, because two belts can share a base belt and differ completely in the field.

How far back should traceability go?

To the fabric batch and the rubber compound batch. That is the level at which you can answer a real question: if one roll on a project behaves differently from the others, was it a different fabric delivery, a different compound mixing batch, or the same batch and a site issue? We keep those records against the roll number, and we can pull them during a claim or an audit. Anything less specific than batch level is not traceability, it is a date stamp.

If you are buying under a project that has an independent inspector, agree the marking scheme with that inspector before production, not after. Marking added later by hand is the fastest way to lose a release certificate. Our quality assurance process is built around roll-number control for exactly this reason.

10Agree the Inspection Plan and the Release Documents

By the time you reach this check, the technical work is done and the question is paperwork discipline. Ask for the inspection and test plan before production starts, and ask for the hold points: when does the factory stop and wait for your nod? On a chevron belt we place two hold points — one before vulcanisation of the pattern, one before packing — because those are the two moments when a mistake is still cheap to fix.

Documents that should travel with a chevron roll: mill test certificate, dimensional report covering width, thickness, length and cleat dimensions, adhesion results, cover abrasion and tensile results, packing list, marking confirmation, and loading photos. Where a project requires fire resistance, the relevant standard is ISO 340 for the conveyor belt flammability test, and DIN 22102 remains the common European reference for cover grade and general construction; RMA grades appear in North American specifications. Name the standard on the certificate, and confirm the exact class and limits against your project specification — a certificate without a standard reference is not evidence.

What does a third-party inspection actually add?

It adds an independent set of eyes at the factory gate and it removes the temptation for either side to argue about a photo. If your project requires it, tell us at the enquiry stage: it changes the production schedule, since an inspector needs to be present at the hold points, and it may require documentation in a specific format. Buyers with a large first order or a new supplier often ask for it, then skip it on repeat orders once the process has proved itself. That sequence makes sense to us.

One document request we see missed repeatedly is the dimensional report for the pattern itself. Width and thickness are easy to measure. Cleat height, cleat pitch, cleat top width and edge margin are the numbers that decide whether the belt performs on your incline, and they should be on the certificate as measured values, not as nominal ones. Ask for them by name and you will get them.

11Understand the Price Build-Up, MOQ, Lead Time and Payment

Two chevron quotes with the same width, length and ply count can differ by a wide margin, and the difference is almost always in the pattern. Cleat height, pattern type, mould complexity and whether a new mould has to be cut all move the number. Base belt carcass and cover grade move it too, but buyers usually understand those. The part that surprises people is the mould: a new pattern geometry needs tooling, and tooling is amortised over the order, which is why the price per metre on 50 m and on 500 m of the same pattern are not close.

Our standard commercial position is simple to state. Minimum order is around 50 m per specification and model, which lets a first order stay small enough to test. Normal lead time is about 30 days, and we can compress to 15 to 20 days on rush orders depending on the mould situation and the factory load at the time. Samples take 2 to 5 days. Payment is T/T with 30% deposit and 70% before shipment, or L/C where that suits your treasury. We support OEM and ODM, including custom cleat height, custom widths and custom colours, and private-label marking on the belt edge.

Which questions should be answered in the quotation itself?

Ask for the quotation to state the carcass and ply count, tension rating, cover grade with top and bottom thickness, cleat height, pattern type, cleat pitch, edge margin, moulded or bonded pattern, roll length and roll weight, packing method, Incoterm, lead time from deposit, and the validity period. A quote that answers those eleven points is comparable with another quote. A quote that gives a price per metre and a total is not, however familiar the supplier looks.

Two commercial habits save trouble later. First, ask whether the price assumes an existing mould or a new one, and if new, whether the tooling is charged once or per order. Second, agree what happens if the specification changes after production starts — a different cleat height is a new belt, not an adjustment. Our conveyor belt factory runs ten production lines, eight for fabric carcass and two for steel cord, with more than 200 employees and over 1,500 industrial customers served since 1988, so scheduling a change is possible, but it has to be priced honestly on both sides.

Cost of ownership also belongs in this comparison. A cheaper belt with a shallow cleat pitch that scours smooth in a year is more expensive than a correctly specified belt that runs three. We would rather quote the second one and explain why than win the order on the first.

12Plan the Shipment and the Arrival Acceptance Test

The last check happens at your gate, and it should be written before the container leaves. An arrival protocol takes half an hour per roll and protects both parties.

Start with the paperwork: bill of lading, commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, mill test certificate and insurance certificate, all with matching quantities and roll numbers. Then inspect physically. Measure belt width at three points along the roll and compare with the PO tolerance. Measure overall thickness with the top and bottom covers at the edges. Measure cleat height at three positions and cleat pitch over at least ten cleats, which is also how you catch a pitch error before it becomes a splice problem. Check the edge margin, count the rolls, verify the marking against the packing list, and look for transport damage: crushed cores, cut edges, straps pressed into the cover, and moisture staining inside the wrap.

What should you do if one roll fails the arrival check?

Photograph it before opening anything further, do not splice it, and send the roll number and the photos the same day. In our experience most apparent defects are either a transit issue, which the insurance covers, or a misunderstanding about a nominal versus a measured value, which is settled in one exchange. What turns a small question into a claim is a belt that gets installed, run for two weeks and then photographed. Tell us early and we will tell you honestly what it is. For a long incline belt we usually ship it open and splice on site, because the joint must fit your pulley and structure. We supply the splice drawing with the cleat positions dimensioned, a written pattern alignment tolerance, and enough belt length for the take-up travel. Endless belts are available where the frame allows factory splicing.

What is your minimum order quantity for a chevron belt?

Around 50 m per specification and model. It keeps a first order small enough to trial while still covering a mould run, and it can be combined with flat belts, EP belts or V-belts in the same container if you are restocking other lines.

How do I check cleat-to-base adhesion after delivery?

Visually inspect the cleat ends and run a blunt probe along the root on each roll before installation. For measured adhesion, keep a 1 m cut sample per batch and have it tested. Batch-level peel records from production, tied to your roll numbers, should accompany the shipment.

Which documents should come with a chevron belt shipment?

Mill test certificate, dimensional report including cleat height and pitch, adhesion results, cover abrasion and tensile results, packing list, marking confirmation, and packing and loading photos. Where the project specifies ISO 340, DIN 22102 or an RMA grade, the certificate should name the standard and the class.

Will a chevron belt run on a standard troughing idler set?

Usually yes, with adjustments. A 35° troughing set generally suits a profiled belt better than 45°, and the return side should avoid narrow rollers that press into the ribs. Give us your idler spacing and pulley diameters with the enquiry and we will confirm the fit before production.
