3. Start With the Application Before You Lock the EP Conveyor Belt Specification

For many industrial lines, an EP rubber conveyor belt is a practical starting category because a textile carcass combines strength with useful flexibility. But “EP conveyor belt” is a construction family, not a complete purchase specification.

The RFQ still needs to establish the required strength rating, carcass construction, cover thicknesses, cover performance and operating conditions. Temperature deserves particular care. Give the supplier the material temperature at the belt contact point, including normal and credible maximum conditions, rather than only the ambient temperature around the conveyor. If hot material arrives intermittently, mention that operating pattern as well. Fabric construction remains suitable for many industrial conveyors where the required strength and system geometry fall within the selected belt's design conditions. Steel cord construction becomes relevant when system calculations or the existing equipment specification call for substantially higher tensile capability and low elongation behavior, particularly on demanding long-distance or high-tension conveyors.

For steel cord belting, ISO 15236-1 covers design, dimensions and mechanical requirements for general-use steel cord conveyor belts. The key purchasing point is that changing from fabric to steel cord conveyor belt is not simply an upgrade to a “stronger belt.” Pulley geometry, tension, take-up, splice design and installation requirements must remain compatible with the conveyor.

6. Standards Belong in the RFQ, but a Standard Number Is Not a Complete Specification

For textile construction, ISO 14890:2026 specifies requirements for rubber- or plastics-covered conveyor belting for general surface use on flat or troughed idlers.
