Selecting the proper conveyor belt thickness and number of plies requires a comprehensive evaluation of the conveyor system, rather than relying only on belt thickness. The first step is to calculate the required working tension based on factors such as conveying capacity, conveyor length, lifting height, belt speed, drive arrangement, and running resistance. After that, the suitable carcass strength and number of plies should be selected according to the required safety factor, troughability, splice efficiency, and minimum pulley diameter.
The cover rubber thickness is selected separately according to the actual working conditions, including material abrasiveness, impact level, particle size, loading method, and expected service life. A thicker belt is not always a better choice, because excessive thickness or too many plies may reduce belt flexibility and make the belt too stiff. Proper selection helps ensure reliable operation, longer service life, and better conveyor performance.
