A useful factory test program starts by separating different failure risks. Tensile testing evaluates the strength behavior of the belt or reinforcement. Abrasion testing evaluates the wear resistance of the rubber under a defined laboratory method.

2. Tensile and Elongation Testing: Verify the Carcass, Not Just the Belt Label

For textile conveyor belts, tensile strength and elongation belong together because both describe how the belt behaves during a controlled tensile test.

ISO 283:2023 specifies a method for determining full-thickness longitudinal tensile strength, elongation at the reference force and elongation at break for conveyor belts with a textile carcass. It can also be used for specified transverse measurements. It does not apply to light conveyor belts covered by the separate light-belt standard.

3. Adhesion Testing: Check Whether the Belt Layers Stay Bonded

A multi-ply rubber conveyor belt depends on more than carcass strength. The structural elements also have to remain bonded during repeated bending, loading and service.

ISO 252:2023 specifies methods for determining adhesion strength between constituent elements of applicable conveyor belts, including adhesion between plies and between covers and the carcass. Its scope has important limits: it excludes steel-cord-reinforced belts and textile-reinforced belts below the stated full-thickness tensile-strength threshold, and it is not intended for light conveyor belts.

3.1 What an adhesion result means for purchasing

An adhesion test gives the quality team controlled evidence about the bonding behavior of the tested construction. Poor bonding can be relevant to separation between plies or between cover and carcass, but a laboratory result should still be interpreted alongside production controls.

During a factory visit, look upstream. Ask how fabric is prepared, how rubber is applied, how ply tension is controlled during belt building and how vulcanization parameters are managed. Testing a finished specimen is valuable; controlling the process that created the bond is equally important.

4. Abrasion Testing: Useful Evidence, but Not a Service-Life Prediction

ISO 4649:2024 specifies methods for determining abrasion resistance of vulcanized or thermoplastic rubber using a rotating cylindrical drum device. The test determines material loss under controlled abrasive action and is suitable for purposes such as comparative testing, quality control and specification compliance.

There is an important limitation for buyers: the standard does not establish a close relationship between this laboratory result and actual service performance.

Actual cover wear is influenced by material abrasiveness, lump size and shape, loading impact, transfer design, belt speed, cleaning, alignment and other operating conditions.

5. Why the Four Tests Should Be Reviewed Together

A quality engineer gets more useful information by treating the four properties as separate parts of a technical risk picture.

Consider an abrasive aggregate conveyor. A suitable abrasion result is relevant because the cover is exposed to wear. But if the carcass does not satisfy the required tensile specification, good cover wear resistance does not solve the structural mismatch. If bonding is inadequate, a strong carcass and wear-resistant cover still do not eliminate separation risk.

The same reasoning works in reverse. High tensile strength does not automatically mean superior abrasion resistance, and a good adhesion result does not establish the correct tensile rating.

6. Standards: Ask Which Requirement Applies to Which Property

Statements such as “ISO conveyor belt” or “DIN standard belt” are too broad for supplier approval. A standard can define a product specification, a test method, or requirements for a particular application. Those are not interchangeable.

For example, ISO 14890:2026 is the current international specification covering rubber- or plastics-covered textile conveyor belting for general surface use on flat or troughed idlers. ISO 283:2023 addresses a specific tensile and elongation test method. ISO 252:2023 addresses applicable adhesion testing, while ISO 4649:2024 addresses rubber abrasion testing.

A quotation that merely says “ISO” therefore leaves a quality engineer with unanswered questions.

  • A report with no specimen identification. The number may be genuine but cannot be confidently connected to the product under review.

  • Abrasion data presented as guaranteed service life. Laboratory abrasion testing is not a direct simulation of every conveyor operating condition.
  • Different suppliers using different methods. The results may not be directly comparable until the methods and conditions are normalized.
  • No defined response to a failed result. Ask how nonconforming material is identified, isolated, reviewed and retested or rejected.

10. How to Put Testing Requirements into the RFQ

The strongest time to define test evidence is before the purchase order—not after the belt has been produced.

Then state which technical properties require documentation and whether you need an internal factory report, witness testing or third-party testing.

For a replacement belt, provide the existing specification and identify any known failure problem. If premature cover wear triggered the purchase, abrasion evidence deserves particular attention. If separation has occurred, include photographs and operating details rather than requesting an adhesion number without context.
