Conveyor belt mistracking can be caused by various factors related to installation, operation, and maintenance. Common causes include misaligned pulleys or idlers, off-centre material loading, material buildup, incorrect or misaligned belt splices, uneven belt tension, twisted or unlevel conveyor frames, damaged belt edges, seized rollers, and changes in wind or weather conditions.

For a quick response, the conveyor should first be stopped and locked out to ensure safety. Then, operators can check and remove material buildup, inspect rollers for blockage, confirm that material is loaded in the centre, and check the alignment of the splice, pulleys, and idlers. Adjustments should be made carefully by identifying and correcting one specific cause at a time.

Randomly tilting multiple idlers or forcing the belt back into position may not solve the real problem and can create additional issues. Regular inspection and proper maintenance are important for keeping the conveyor belt running smoothly and reducing tracking problems.
